Gardening: My finger-nails are filthy and I have mosquito bites

but what an exciting day at the garden… today a yellow squash and zucchini appeared! :)

There sure is a lot of work involved… but so far I have really enjoyed it!  I know already that I want to plant one next year and even see what we can grow  year-round. I am sure it would be a lot easier with a tiller or something else to keep the rows clean and all that, but I have enjoyed the exercise in getting out there and doing what I can myself.

More later!

The home garden: “Tiny” but exciting news

Can you believe it? Our first tomato… on the “Cherry Tomato” plant! As I was leaving the house this morning I looked specifically for tomatoes on the plants we have at the house and found none… but after lunch when I returned I found this tiny tomato.  This was the first plant to show blooms but now all the plants have at least a few blooms!  How exciting!

It gets better… when I got home this evening from working on the garden and watering it as well as  feeding momma and the twins, look what else appeared since I was gone… and looks like many more to come! Yay – excitement level just increased a lot!  Last night we ate at some great friends’ house and ate some of their home-grown tomatoes from their garden… they were so yummy and got me excited and hopeful that ours will someday be edible!  They are also growing a garden for the first time, so it has been fun! Check it out!

All for now, I should do something with my evening!

Gardening: Now we are really growing!

Surely pictures are enough for today right? They speak for themselves I would say… but incase they are shy – the garden is really growing and it is super exciting!

Gardening: The grass and weeds are thriving!

It has been super dry, so I went out to water the garden again today and it looks like the plants (that I want) were overall looking pretty good, some were really wilted, but not completely shrivelled… just overdue for water.  The grass and weeds on the other hand were having a huge party.

See the green tint everywhere? Well it is kind of hard to tell in this picture because I have already worked a section of it.

Here is what I have yet to do.  I have a lot more to do hopefully tomorrow afternoon! I don’t want to get too behind! :)

This is not a good picture, but you can see the darker sections where I got out a lot of the grass and weeds…. be gone you unwanted things!  The plants have really started to grow though – so that is super exciting!

More soon,  I will get some pictures of the new blooms on the squash and a few on the cucumbers… there are some onions finally coming up too I think, ok I hope!

Bye for now!  Happy growing stuff – I am not only growing a garden, but a mess at the house because I would rather be outside! :)

Gardening update… been a few days!

I went out the the garden real quick today to give it some water and pull out some grass/weeds and snapped a few pictures! I will be back out in the next day or so and be able to look a lot closer!  Fun, fun fun!!

more growing…

Yet another update -  I know you don’t really care that much but at least it is a super short post!

One lone yellow squash entered the world today… the world meaning our garden of course :)

meanwhile there is a pear tree right next to the garden on the north side… beautiful huh?

Debut of the pumpkins and more

Today was another great day at the garden!  The pumpkins began popping out of the soil…

also, meet our little “you get out of the garden you deer and critters man”… and he even makes noise! Crafty huh? Go Greg and Pa for making him…

but there is still one more thing… we got a sprinkler! It has not rained since well before we even planted the garden and it is not in the forecast for the next week, so it needs water!

I will check in again tomorrow to see if anything else has popped up!  As for the watermelons and zucchini that I posted on yesterday, so many more have come up – yay!

Gardening: Oh boy – stuff is growing!

I went to water the garden today  (yesterday I was just in time before everything was pretty shriveled and too wilted to want to admit…) and I am on it  earlier than yesterday!  Until it rains pretty good, I will need to water it everyday!  Anyways, I was in la-la land holding the nozzle and giving everything a good dose of water when some green caught my eye…  the zucchini plants are coming up (planted on May 3)… yay!  Then, on down to the watermelons, they were starting to come up too (planted on May 4)…. yay again!  That is all the seeds that came up  today at the garden - that I saw at least, I studied everything pretty good after I saw those 2 types coming up!  There are some basil seeds coming up at the house in my tomato plants as well… so overall, a pretty good garden day! Nothing was dead and stuff was actually growing!  :)

Garden Day 4: All planting is done!

Garden day 4 (May 5, 2011)

Well, all the planting is finally done!

Planted today:

  • 4 tomato plants
  • spinach (seeds)
  • lettuce (seeds)
  • basil (seeds)
  • oregano (seeds)
  • pepper (seeds)
  • pumpkin (seeds)

I think this concludes my garden planting so far… we will see! I filled up the space pretty good, so there is probably not room for more!   Here is a labeled picture of what is where! It may be hard to see some of them, but this is taken from the opposite side of the last picture I labeled… maybe you get the idea…

You can see that my rows are not even, my rows are not straight and my rows are quite random, but…. well – oh well!

Now that the planting is done comes the maintenance, today there was already quite a bit of grass coming through – so I need to stay on top of that no doubt… but stay tuned for more garden updates as things start to grow (hopefully). and make their debut through the soil!  Oh, and not to mention it needs water, water, water as we have not had rain for a while!

Garden Day 3: More planting!

It is day 3 (May 4) of working in our garden… and another absolutely beautiful day to work outside!  Boy-dog is my garden buddy today… check him out riding with me on the golf-cart down to the old house.  Today was pretty productive I would say…

I planted:

  •  watermelon plants (8) and 2 varieties of watermelon seeds
  •  sugar snap peas (seeds)
  • 2 varities of carrots (seeds)
  • 2 onion varities (yellow sweet and green seeds)

In looking at the pictures I took, they are actually not good at all! So, oops :) I will have much better pictures after I finish planting of the entire garden space next post.

Stay tuned!
